On April 8, 2024, the moon will pass in front of the sun, creating a total eclipse, which will be visible from Mexico, up through the central part of Texas, the eastern US, and southeastern Canada. Corpus Christi will not see totality, but will be in the viewing path of a partial eclipse.
A solar eclipse happens when, at just the right moment, the moon passes between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow on the Earth that either fully or partially blocks the sun’s light in some areas. In Corpus Christi, the April 8 eclipse will occur beginning at 12:13 p.m. and end at 2:55 p.m. Maximum coverage will be around 1:33 p.m., when approximately 90% of the sun will be covered by the moon.
We are excited for our students to participate in this exciting event. The safety of our students is our top priority and we are taking all necessary precautions to ensure the eclipse viewing is conducted safely under adult supervision.
-
To participate in this viewing event, each CCISD secondary campus has organized a structured, supervised viewing opportunity for students and is providing viewing glasses to each student. Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun.
-
· In preparation for the viewing event, science classes will engage in learning experiences related to the eclipse, including viewing a safety video, a live stream of the event via NASA’s website, as well as content related lessons.
-
· All students will sign and return the student conduct agreement in order to participate.
· If you would like for your student to participate via NASA live feed only and not participate in direct viewing with glasses, please return the opt out form attached to this letter.
A solar eclipse is a memory to last a lifetime! Taking precautionary measures and following important rules will ensure an enjoyable and safe experience for our students. Participating students will be asked to sign a student conduct agreement in order to view the eclipse. Please join us in promoting safety by talking to your child about vision safety and the dangers of not using their eclipse glasses during the event. We appreciate your support, and we look forward to sharing this great learning experience.
